At least, if the number of reservations for the R2 is any guide. Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe posted Friday on Instagram that the company had received more […]

Ex-google engineer charged for stealing ai secrets, working with Chinese firms

A former Google software engineer has been charged over the theft of trade secrets from the Alphabet company whilst working covertly with two other firms based in China.
Linwei Ding, also known as Leon Ding, was charged this week by a federal jury in San Francisco on four counts of trade secret theft, which could see the Chinese national punished with up to 10 years in prison. In addition, Ding could be hit with a fine of $250,000 for each count.
The indictment revealed the 38-year-old stole detailed information regarding the hardware infrastructure and software capability that enables Google’s vast data centers to train artificial intelligence (AI) models via machine learning.
Thanks to his position, Ding was able to leak this extensive knowledge on chips and systems, including blueprints designed to gain leverage over cloud rivals Amazon and Microsoft (which design their own), as well as to reduce reliance on GPUs from Nvidia.
How have authorities responded to the charge?
The case against Ding was announced at a press conference hosted by the American Bar Association in San Francisco, with various law enforcement figures present, including Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director, Christopher Wray.
“The Justice Department just will not tolerate the theft of our trade secrets and intelligence,” implored Garland.
“Today’s charges are the latest illustration of the lengths affiliates of companies based in the People’s Republic of China are willing to go to steal American innovation,” stated Wray.
“The theft of innovative technology and trade secrets from American companies can cost jobs and have devastating economic and national security consequences.”
This development comes just over 12 months after the Biden administration instigated a multiagency Disruptive Technology Strike Force to help prevent advanced technology from falling into the reach of countries such as China and Russia, or any similar activity which would threaten national security.
AI is thought to be at the top of the DTSF enforcement priority list, such is the importance of the technology in the battlefield of competition between major nation-state actors. This was alluded to by Attorney General Garland who added, “As with all evolving technologies, AI has pluses and minuses, advantages and disadvantages, great promise and the risk of great harm.”
Ding was first hired by Google in 2019, then three years later he allegedly began his nefarious thefts at the same time he was supposedly being headhunted for a senior position at a Chinese tech startup.
By mid-2023, he had uploaded more than 500 confidential files belonging to Google but by the end of the year, the tech giant had become suspicious, taking away his laptop on 4 January 2024, one day prior to the date he intended to resign his position.

Fortnite’s new season brings Greek gods to the battle royale

One of the internet’s best-known Fortnite leakers proves their chops again as the new Greek Mythology season launches today, March 8. Welcome to Chapter 5 Season 2: Myths and Mortals.
With the launch of the new season comes a new map, a new Battle Pass, and a whole host of exciting new abilities and features.
Currently, four new map areas are known about: Grim Gate, the portal to the Underworld; The Underworld, the home of Hades; Mount Olympus, the home of Zeus; and Brawler’s Battleground, the arena of Ares. Keep an eye on our Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2 map page for more info and updates as we get them.
As for new skins for Season 2, seven have been confirmed, including Cerberus which you get when you purchase the Battle Pass. There’s also an as-yet-unconfirmed leak that we’ll be getting a skin of Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Keep an eye on our list of Fortnite Battle Pass skins for updates as they come.
What else does Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2 add?
Being Greek mythology-themed opens the doors to plenty of fun and exciting new features, and Epic has not disappointed.
The Thunderbolt of Zeus enables players who find this mystical weapon to leap into the air and hurl down bolts of lightning upon their foes. As if that wasn’t cool enough, you can also find the Wings of Icarus, which allow you to soar through the skies and take enemies unaware from above.
Both of these abilities have their own limitations of course – The Thunderbolt of Zeus has only three charges, and the Wings of Icarus will burn up and melt away if you rely on them too much (very thematic).
As if that wasn’t enough, there will also be a third power introduced partway through the Season, the Chains of Hades – keep an eye open for an update that gives more details about that.

X launches long form articles for some users

Elon Musk’s X continues its battle with legacy media and traditional websites with its launch of long form articles, which vastly expands the possibilities open to writers on the platform.
Announced in a post on X yesterday (March 7), the feature expands the previous character limit from 25,000 by around four times, up to 100,000 characters. It also allows for media embedding, including images, videos, and of course, X posts.
However, currently, the editor is basic. While it can do basic text formatting like bold, italic, strikethrough, and bullet point and numbered lists, it lacks a markdown reader and can’t handle code blocks, something X users have already been requesting.

I’ve been using articles, and they’re fantastic! It would be beneficial to incorporate something like markdown for easier editing. One significant challenge I’ve encountered is the inability to include code snippets in my articles. I’ve had to resort to taking screenshots of my…

When a user has written an article, it will appear in a new tab on their profile alongside their replies and media tabs. When reading an article, users have the option to full-screen the page for a cleaner, distraction-free interface, which is a nice addition.
Articles behave like normal X posts, with the ability to reply, repost, and like any article post.
Who can write articles on X/Twitter?
‘Articles’ is a feature that is only available to Premium + subscribers on X. While a Premium account costs around $130 annually, Premium + is double that at around $260 – more if you pay monthly instead of annually.
Presently, it is unclear what the uptake will be for this feature. Under Elon Musk, X has become increasingly hostile to journalists and people who create content off-platform. It notably suppresses Substack links, and removed headlines from links to external content, minimizing the capacity for creators to reach their audiences.
Musk has previously discussed his plans to take on live streaming platform Twitch, owned by Amazon, and bring monetized live streaming directly to X. X’s CEO Linda Yaccarino also encouraged Rockstar Games to upload the trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 directly to X rather than sharing a YouTube link. They did so, but more than 24 hours after sharing the link to the YouTube video.
His goal seems to be to minimize the reasons users would ever leave the site by gradually adding features that have been siloed across different services and rolling them into one huge X ecosystem that charges a fee and keeps users on-site, endlessly scrolling through a variety of content types. Whether he will be successful remains to be seen.
